LECTURERS’ COMPETENCIES IN LEARNING PROCESS BASED ON STUDENT CENTERED LEARNING

Abstract: Learning is the combination of activities related to teaching media, educational psychology and learning model that is used. The achievement of the learning process depends on these three (3) aspects. The role of the lecturer is needed and the concept of transferring knowledge no longer applicable, instead invites the students with the thinking process. This method will leads the students to be creative and critical in dealing with various problems in society. Student Centered Learning (SCL) is a transformation in the paradigm of learning, which is a strength in the learning process. The study of lecturers’ competencies in Student Centered Learning is increased in an era of changing paradigm towards education. It is very important for the improvements of lecturers’ performance in order to improve the quality of graduates. Related to the shifting paradigm towards education, the role of the lecturer becomes important in encouraging the active participation of students in learning process.

The type of this study is descriptive, aims to explore the competence of lecturers in implementing Student Centered Learning (SCL). The subjects are lecturers and students of The Department of Geography FIS UM, which consists of 30 active lecturers and 15 students form each class. The analysis were performed by a single tabulation and product moment correlation.

The average value of lecturers’ competencies in learning process based on SCL is in the range of 2.79 – 3.45, with as much as 70 percent have and average value of more than 3. Based on the following data, it can be said that most of the lecturers in the Department of Geography has been implementing the learning process based on SCL. If it is for further studied, factors that mostly affects lecturers’ competencies in learning process based on SCL are age, educational background and work period.
