THE HEALTH BEHAVIOUR OF PROVERTY COMMUNITY SETTLEMENT ENVIRONMENT

Abstract: Proverty is still a big homework for the government because there are still many people who live under the proverty line. The problem of chaotic urban settlements pattern causes rundown neighborhood scattered in various city corners such as along the river bank and the edge of the railroad. The purpose of this study is to find and uncover various conditions as the backgrounds of low health behavior of society environment. This study uses a quantitative approach, as the population is housewives who have toddlers, the samples are taken purposively, and the information collections are through interviews and in-dept interview techniques. The data were analyzed with descriptive analysis (tabulation) and statistical (multiple regression). The research result shows that more than half of the infants during the past 30 days have been ill. The health behavior characteristics of the society environment indicate that the majority of society still use the springs on either side of the river as a source of clean water. Beside, there are also some people who throw garbage, fecal waste, and dispose of household wastewater into the river. The social, economic, demography characteristics show that the majority of society has high school education, with incomes are still below the City Minimum Wages (CMW) and the financial burdens are still high. The results also indicate that the income levels, education and the financial burden influence on health behavior of Biophysical settlement environment. Associated with their knowledge and attitudes toward the environmental health has been good, but their actions are less. It is recommended that the efforts in health counseling have to be increased by the public health officials and the society should be more actively involved in the running program – a sanitation program from City Government.
