The Department of Geography, Faculty of Social Sciences, Universitas Negeri Malang hosted Assoc. Prof. Dr. Farizul Hafiz Kasim, Head of the Special Interest Group (SIG) Chemical Tech-Agro, Faculty of Chemical Engineering & Technology, Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP), for an academic visit and Special Lecture. His visit is part of UniMAP’s official research delegation to UM scheduled for 9 December 2025, as documented in the formal request letter he signed on 17 October 2025.

Dr. Farizul delivered a Special Lecture titled “Transforming the Harumanis Mango Industry Through Research, Technology & Community Impact.” He presented the scientific and technological innovations that have driven the rise of Harumanis—Perlis’ signature mango variety—from a local commodity into a nationally recognised agro-industrial product. His lecture highlighted how evidence-based research, precision agriculture, and community engagement can reshape local economies and strengthen rural livelihoods.

His visit also reflects the ongoing implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Universiti Malaysia Perlis and Universitas Negeri Malang.
As stated in the official letter (page 1), Dr. Farizul outlined three primary objectives of the delegation’s visit:

  1. Introducing SIG Chemical Tech-Agro and exploring collaborative research opportunities,
  2. Sharing ongoing research undertaken by UniMAP,
  3. Discussing potential involvement of postgraduate students in joint research initiatives

During the session, Dr. Farizul engaged in productive discussions with UM staff and researchers, focusing on collaborative possibilities in agro-geography, food security, applied chemical technology, and community-driven research across tropical environments.
The planned activities—detailed in the official visit itinerary on page 2—include research presentations, joint discussions, laboratory visits, and a closing session with token exchange

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Farizul Hafiz Kasim’s visit serves as a significant step in strengthening Malaysia–Indonesia academic ties and advancing interdisciplinary collaboration between UniMAP and Universitas Negeri Malang. His presence underscores UM’s commitment to international engagement, research excellence, and sustainable development.
